Bathroom Remodeling on a Budget

bathroom remodeling on a budget

We have not one, but two bathrooms that need a remodel. Yikes! So, I thought I'd share a little about our project and how we're saving money along the way... Our shower floor cracked. The "all the way across and someone will fall through any day now" kind of cracked. This shower bathroom (master bathroom) has been remodeled twice already in the 8 years that we have lived here, so we know that this particular bathroom is never easy. Nothing will go as planned and it will probably take twice as long to complete. Yeah, it's one of "those" remodels. In an effort to simplify our lives, Mike and I decided to add a shower to our other bathroom (the kids' bathroom), which currently has a tub … [Read more...]

Lunch Box Ideas (Tips, Tricks & Fabulous Gear)

school lunch box ideas

Only 28 more days until school starts. Not that I'm counting or anything. This means that I have 28 more days to get organized, so that school mornings go as smooth as possible. Packing lunches is definitely on the top of my list of things that can make school mornings really hectic. But, it's so worth the effort. It costs $6/day...or $30/week for my kids to buy school lunches. I can make their lunches for half of that (or less!). Plus, I know what ingredients are going into their lunches and I know what they will/won't eat, so there's a lot less wasted food. So, today I thought I would share a few of my lunch packing tips and tricks with you all, in case you have hectic mornings like … [Read more...]

Frugal Tip: Beef Broth From Roast

beef broth from roast

Today I am sharing with you a really simple money saving tip. We eat beef roast quite often at our house, which I usually just season with onion, garlic and a little bit of sea salt. This leaves the roast tasting like...well, like roast. ;) More often that not, I cook my roasts in my slow cooker and I always add a little water - usually about 2 cups. The roast always turns out tender and juicy, with an awesome flavor. What's left in the slow cooker after we have eaten dinner and put away leftovers, is quite a bit of well-seasoned broth. Once the broth has cooled enough to handle, I use a fine mesh strainer to remove any chunks of meat and onion. I fill some freezer containers, … [Read more...]

Stace’s Favorite Travel Tools (Websites)

cool travel sites

For a lot of folks, Summer is a time for family vacations. For some, that means packing up and heading out on a faraway adventure. For the rest of us, that means hanging out with friends and family at home - a "staycation". (We took a huge family vacation last year, so this year we decided to take it easy). I know that there are tons of travel sites out there, but I wanted to highlight a couple that I think are pretty handy. These sites are mostly for driving trips, as that's usually our preferred choice of travel. When I was growing up, that was a huge part of family vacation - squeezing into the car and hanging out for hours upon hours while we drove to our destination! For your … [Read more...]

Tips For Saving Money on Meat

meat section01

I've mentioned it before, but my husband and I try to eat low carb, high protein meals as much as possible. Because of this, we go through a lot of meat at our house. If you're not careful, meat can get very expensive. This is definitely a part of the food budget where you have to get creative in order to save money. Here are a few ways that I save money on meat. Stock up on sales, reduced price meats and manager's specials. Keep track of what you consider a "stock up" price and when you come across a good deal, buy a little extra to stock up on. Holidays are a great time to stock up on seasonal meats, such as turkey and ham, to enjoy throughout the year without the high price … [Read more...]

Natural & Organic Products: Three Easy Ways To Save

natural organic2

First, let me say that I am by no means a hard-core fanatic when it comes to buying natural and organic products (for example, I don't need organic cotton hand towels (no offense to anyone that has these!)). However, I do try to buy as much as I can - especially in the way of produce, dairy, meats and grains. … [Read more...]

How To Save On Care Packages & Donations

DSCF2073

(In case you missed my original post about sending care packages to troops, you can read about that here). My goal here is to show you how you can do this for very little out of pocket expense. Whether it's saying thank you to our troops, donating to your favorite cause or just showing someone that you care, you don't have to spend a lot of money doing it.  Over the past few months, I have accumulated quite a stash of travel-size personal care items (deodorant, feminine products, toothpaste, etc.). All of these items I have gotten for free (or pretty darn close to free) by using coupons. (I had been saving these smaller items to make a sort of gift bag for people staying at the local … [Read more...]
