Farmers Market Trip: Moundridge {7/21}

moundridge farmers market

I'm a little disappointed that I haven't made it back to the Newton farmers' market or to Wichita yet, like I had originally planned. Our weekends have just been so crazy busy these past few weeks. But, there's still time. I'm hoping maybe next weekend I can venture out a little further... I am very thankful that we have a local farmers' market, here in town, that is open two days every week. I always find great produce here - and an occasional batch of cinnamon rolls or homemade hummus! ;) Today I woke up a little later than normal (I LOVE SATURDAYS!), so my wonderful husband did the shopping (with the help of our girls). I only had a couple of items that I asked for specifically … [Read more...]

Farmers Market Trip: Moundridge & Hutchinson {6/23}

hutchinson farmers market

Whew! It's been a busy day already! We made it to the Moundridge farmers' market a little before 8:00 this morning. Which is rare for us, since we usually sleep as long as we can on Saturday mornings! Got some great produce and fresh herbs. I will tell you that my husband already has big plans for this fresh mint - probably in the form of some homemade mint mojitos. :P The kids and I wanted to take my husband and father-in-law to breakfast as a late Father's Day treat, so we headed to Hutch. Since we were going to be in town anyway, we decided to hit the farmers' market. So glad we did! Every year I look forward to the produce at Polk's in Medora, so I was ecstatic to … [Read more...]

Farmers Market Trip: Hutchinson {6/9}

hutch farmers market

On Saturday, I took my trusty sidekick (Rae, a.k.a. Mini Me) and we headed to the Hutchinson farmers' market. It was a pretty hoppin' place! I had never been to this one, so it was an interesting experience. Along with the multitude of vendors, there was also a live band, free coffee and a balloon artist. Which, of course, was Mini Me's favorite part...next to the free samples. :P She was pretty proud of her pink poodle. Silly girl! I bought a few items: (2) zucchinis, (1) head of cabbage, red potatoes, a spicy salad mix and some wine jelly. I always allow myself to splurge on one item, which is usually something that I wouldn't normally buy. This week's splurge was the wine jelly. SO … [Read more...]

Farmers Market Trip: Newton {5/26}

newton farmmark

I must say that, as large as Newton is, I was really surprised at how small the farmers' market was. As we were walking towards it, one of my kids said, "This isn't even as big as Moundridge!". Don't get me wrong, we love the Moundridge farmers' market. But we're a small town, so it's never a huge market. I would love to see Newton expand and get some more vendors to participate. I would love to go back! Well, it wasn't a complete bust. I did pick up a few things while I was there: A few fresh scallions, a fresh bulb of garlic and some new potatoes. All things that I love, love, love! :) How did you fare at your farmers' market this weekend? … [Read more...]

Farmers Market Trip: Moundridge {5/19}

purchases02

I picked up a few goodies at the Moundridge farmers market today: They opened at 8:00 am, but we didn't get there until a little after 9:00 am, and some of the vendors were already sold out of stuff! That was fantastic to hear, but next time I will be sure to get there a little earlier. Every year I look forward to picking up fresh herbs, but that vendor was sold out when we got there. (I'm telling you, just smelling that fresh basil and oregano makes me want to run home immediately and make a huge bath of pasta sauce!). I bought some Daddy's Honey and some avocado hummus from Ms. Cara and her lovely sidekick: As you can see from the sign, Cara has all kinds of other yummy items, … [Read more...]

Farmers Markets List {McPherson County & Surrounding Areas}

farmmark

For all of you locals, I am posting a few farmers market listings here, all in one spot. Consider this your quick reference guide. ;) Remember, you can also use the links in this post to search other areas. I have actually only been to a couple of farmers markets in my area, including our little town of Moundridge (where I always get fresh produce, some fantastic local honey and fresh herbs :)). This year I am going to try something a little different. I will still frequent our local market, but I am also going to shop at a different farmers market every weekend! I love traveling around to our neighboring towns and I can't wait to see what they have to offer. I will be sharing … [Read more...]

Shopping Your Local Farmers Markets

04apples

Shopping the local farmers markets is high on my list of things I love to do. These are a great way to support your local farmers (and other vendors). And as an added benefit, you know exactly where your produce comes from. As far as cost goes, I have found that if I shop around and shop smart, I don't pay much more than I would at my local grocery stores. In fact, some items are even cheaper at the farmers market! In addition to produce, you can usually find all sorts of other items at a farmers market: baked goods, fresh herbs, homemade nut butters, homemade salsas, local honey and handmade (non-food) items. It's like a one-stop shop for all things local. :) Here are a few resources … [Read more...]
