A Season of Thoughtful Giving

food donations

My kids' elementary school is currently having a food drive, to help stock our local food pantry. As I was gathering items from my pantry this morning, for my kids to take to school, I was reminded of an article I read last year that shaped the way I view food drives. Last year I came across this article from Lynn at Lynn's Kitchen Adventures and it really had an impact on how I choose what foods to donate to food drives. I thought with Thanksgiving right around the corner, this would be a good time to share this article with you all. I will admit to being one of those people that used to quickly grab a few items from my pantry, with little thought as to who would be receiving the … [Read more...]

The Times They Are a-Changin’

time for change

It's Off To Work I Go... I am happy to announce that I begin working full-time tomorrow. (Yay!) While I love being a stay-at-home mommy, I feel like it's time for a change. My children are in school all day and I have been blessed with a wonderful job opportunity that I would be silly not to accept. What This Means For Saving Stace When I started this blog, my goal was to write about what I am passionate about - raising three fabulous (but slightly crazy ;)) kids, my journey in healthy eating and wellness and saving money along the way. I will continue to write about my experiences and I would love for you all to join me in my adventures! I know that many of you utilize my weekly … [Read more...]

Nothing Says Fall Like Fresh Apple Cider

polk's apple cider

The first time I ever visited Kansas (in fall of 2000), my husband introduced me to Polk's Farm Market. If you're not familiar with Polk's, it's a little produce market in Medora. It's open from August through December and is owned by a couple named Earl & Pam, who are always friendly and helpful. Polk's sells fresh fruits & vegetables, fresh apple cider, pumpkins, nuts and candies. I had never experienced real, freshly made apple cider until I visited Polk's. What can I say? I led a sheltered life. ;) This stuff is amazing! (They do offer samples of the cider, so be sure to ask!) Anyway, I fell in love with this little place. The cider is wonderful and there is always an … [Read more...]

Are You Ready For Some Football?!

homecoming_little d

Last week was Homecoming week. If you know me or my husband at all, you know that we are not sports fans. Sure, we like to watch our kids play soccer, but that's pretty much the extent of our enthusiasm for sports. So, when I found out a few weeks ago that Little D's name had been drawn to be ball carrier this year, I will admit that I was a little torn at first. My thought process went something like this: Oh, that's neat. Little D will be excited. Wait, that means we have to go to a football game. I don't know anything about football. Well, Little D likes football. :P Anyway, he ended up participating and he loved every minute of it. Getting to be in the spotlight (he's quite the … [Read more...]

We’re In For a Wild Ride This Year…

summer fun

This photo was obviously taken at the beginning of summer, when everything had color! Where we live, we have one week left until school starts. Yay! I think we're prepared. Backpacks are filled with school supplies. School wardrobes have been replenished (with the exception of shoes...that's next on my list). We are steadily working on completing our 2012 Summer To-Do List. I'm really excited about school starting, as it's good for both the kids and I to get back to a regular routine. Plus, this year will bring a lot of new extracurricular activities for my kiddos. I'm looking forward to seeing them branch out and try new things. I am one of those people that embraces change. … [Read more...]

End-of-Summer Fun

great wolf lodge

Yes, I realize that we technically still have another month of summer left. But when school starts, it always feels like the end of summer for me. Anyone else feel like this? Since our family didn't really take a vacation this year, my husband and I decided to take a fun weekend trip to end summer break. We just got back from spending a couple of days in Kansas City, where we went to Great Wolf Lodge and spent some quality time with family that we don't get to see often enough. Mike and I have actually talked about going to Great Wolf Lodge for a couple of years now, but since our kids took swim lessons this summer, this seemed like a perfect time to test out their new swimming … [Read more...]

Lunch Box Ideas (Tips, Tricks & Fabulous Gear)

school lunch box ideas

Only 28 more days until school starts. Not that I'm counting or anything. This means that I have 28 more days to get organized, so that school mornings go as smooth as possible. Packing lunches is definitely on the top of my list of things that can make school mornings really hectic. But, it's so worth the effort. It costs $6/day...or $30/week for my kids to buy school lunches. I can make their lunches for half of that (or less!). Plus, I know what ingredients are going into their lunches and I know what they will/won't eat, so there's a lot less wasted food. So, today I thought I would share a few of my lunch packing tips and tricks with you all, in case you have hectic mornings like … [Read more...]

Eleven Wonderful Years…

anniversary11

It's a special day in our household. My husband, Mike, and I are celebrating our 11 year wedding anniversary. :) I wanted to pay tribute to a man who has become not only the most wonderful friend I have ever known, but a terrific father and provider for our family. I thank God every day for the life that I have. While it's not perfect - it's perfect for me. I'm a lucky gal - this man comes home from a long day at work and doesn't hesitate to wash dishes, do some laundry, sweep the floors, etc. Yep, I think I'll keep him. … [Read more...]

Our 2012 Summer To-Do List

2012 summer to-do list

I don't know about other places, but where we live summer break lasts about 3 1/2 months. I love my kids dearly. I do. But, when it's over 100 degrees every single day for weeks on end, I start wishing school was back in session. Because when we're stuck in a house all day, trying to beat the heat, we tend go stir-crazy after awhile. Anyway, I came across this post from Wendolonia recently and it got me thinking about how much I need to make summertime as fun as possible for my kids. So, the kids and I sat down and brainstormed about things that we would love to do this summer - crafts, cooking, places to go - and came up with our own "Summer To-Do List". There are so many activities … [Read more...]

Let There Be Veggies…Soon!

container garden

I've been working like crazy to keep my mini container garden going, which has been a really fun project. The kids and I love going out every day to water the plants and check their progress. Oh, and I added a cucumber plant, too! My tomato plants have grown quite a bit since I planted them. I even have one tiny tomato growing! And quite a few of these little yellow flowers...which hopefully means we will have more tomatoes soon! I lost one of my tomato plants due to a soil fungus. :( I almost lost another one, but thanks to some tips from my local nursery and a couple of awesome readers (thanks, Michele and Michelle!), I was able to nurse it back to life. … [Read more...]
