Some Myths Surrounding Children’s Oral Health

You might have had people tell you conflicting views on how to take care of your child’s teeth. As much as baby teeth are only temporary and will eventually fall out, they are still important. These serve as placeholders for when their permanent teeth are ready to erupt, which is why they should start practicing good oral hygiene at an early age.

You also don’t have to wait until they start going to school to send them on their first visit to the dentist. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry suggests they go to their first dental appointment before their first birthday.

Common Dental Problems in Children

Milk is a great source of calcium, but when baby teeth are in frequent contact with sweetened drinks, it can trigger the growth of bacteria that cause baby bottle tooth decay (or childhood caries). Leaving this problem untreated may cause difficulties in chewing and speaking – and if your child is already going to school, this could hinder them from concentrating because the pain can be overwhelming.

If your child has a habit of sucking his or her thumb, he is at risk of developing malocclusions. These bad bites can lead to your child needing braces in the future.

Your child is also susceptible to gum disease, which is why you should teach them that brushing their teeth is important. When plaque goes out of control, it eats away at the soft tissues of the child’s mouth, inflaming it or causing it to swell and bleed.

Most of the time, dental problems are preventable and with your guidance, your children can avoid suffering from oral issues that may affect their quality of life. Proper brushing, flossing and regular dental visits go a long way, especially in maintaining healthy smiles until adulthood.
